Engineering internships in the UK, by the numbers

How this was measured

We track engineering and software internships as they are published on public job boards and on companies' own careers pages, and record each one the first time we see it. These figures cover every posting we recorded in the UK in the 30 days to 28 August 2026.

A posting only reaches the board if its employer is on a list we keep of companies we believe are real and actually pay interns. That gate is the point of the site, and it is also the biggest thing to hold in mind when reading these numbers.

What these numbers are not

• This is not a census of every internship in the UK. It is a census of the ones that got past the gate above, so it describes the market a student would actually want to apply to rather than the whole of it.
• “Said nothing about pay” does not mean unpaid. It means the posting did not state a figure we could read. A genuinely unpaid role and one that simply never mentioned money are indistinguishable here, and we do not guess between them.
• Applicant counts are frozen at the moment we found the posting. They are what the listing reported then, not now, which is the whole reason a low one is worth acting on quickly.
• Only what employers state is counted. Skills, duration and working arrangements are read from the posting text, so a requirement that goes unmentioned is missing rather than absent.
